The Future of Cities |
|
Decentralized energy grids are the future, where local solar, wind, and battery storage systems empower neighborhoods to become self-sufficient. FutureGood worked with nonprofits in St. Croix to envision solutions to their aging, petroleum-powered energy system. When Hurricane Maria destroyed this system in 2017, FEMA's guidelines required rebuilding to the same (outdated) standard. Thanks to new rules under the Biden-Harris administration, FEMA can now fund net-zero energy projects. |
What this could mean for the social sector: Organizations should assess whether their policies align with future trends. If they don't, prioritize updating the policies. |

The "Floating Garden" is an innovative solution that tackles rising city heat while enhancing urban beauty and fostering biodiversity. Installed above streets in Spain, this system not only cools the environment for pedestrians below but also includes a built-in watering mechanism to sustain the greenery. It’s a forward-thinking model for urban areas, demonstrating how cities can address climate challenges while creating more livable, vibrant spaces for their residents. |
What this could mean for the social sector: The "Floating Garden" model offers a blueprint for integrating green infrastructure into urban planning, fostering sustainability while improving community well-being. How does your organization's space foster sustainability? |

One River North, a luxury apartment building set to be completed in Denver this year, offers a unique approach to blending nature with urban living. Designed by MAD Architects, this innovative building features a "landscaped rift" in its façade, allowing residents to hike through a terraced green space that extends to the top. This design reflects a growing trend toward integrating natural elements into high-density urban environments, promoting both sustainability and well-being. |
What this could mean for the social sector: One River North’s innovative design shows that urban development can prioritize community wellness and nature. However it is essential that green spaces are not limited to private use models like this. |
